For many of us, it can be difficult to find the motivation to stick to a personal training program in the winter, whether that be a series of weekly group workouts, one-on-one sessions with a personal gym trainer, or simply fitting in some HIIT exercises once per day. Even here in Fort Lauderdale, where our winters are fairly mild, it can be a chore to get into your workout clothes and make your way to the gym. Maybe it’s because the holidays are a busy time, with family in town, gifts to buy, and extra shifts to pick up so you can pay for it all. Or, maybe it’s because you don’t have to worry about perfecting your beach body for a few more months.
However, taking care of your body is always important, even in the winter. In fact, it’s even more important for a number of reasons. That being said, our personal trainers at PumpFit Club are dedicating this blog post to why it’s so important to work out in the winter, even if it’s the last thing you want to do when it’s chilly outside.
This should be obvious to both bodybuilders and workout beginners, as the whole point of running, lifting weights, or going to a group fitness class is to stay healthy. Sure, you could be working out to get a bangin’ body, but you can’t realistically achieve this without getting your heart rate up, burning fat, and building muscle (even lean muscle building). Prioritizing your health is especially important in the winter, as people tend to live more sedentary lifestyles when the sun isn’t out and temperatures aren’t in the 80-degree range. Plus, with the holidays right around the corner, you’ll be more likely to indulge in sweet treats and big meals with the family, which makes it more important than ever to keep your heart healthy and work off those extra calories. And when we say “stay healthy,” we don’t just mean physical health.
Combat The Winter Blues
Seasonal depression is a real thing, and for many people, the changes in seasons can cause unpleasant emotional changes that seem uncontrollable. As personal trainers, we are huge advocates for using exercise to make you feel good when you’re down, and working out really is the quickest and healthiest way to fight off those wintery blues. Unlike binge-watching movies and eating sweets, exercising releases natural, feel-good hormones that are good for your mind, body, and soul. There really isn’t a healthy replacement for these endorphins, which give you that “workout high” that boosts your mood and gives you energy to conquer your day.
During the winter, it can be hard to look past the cold, even here in beautiful Fort Lauderdale. So, when you find yourself shivering, ditch your bed and consider going for a run, signing up for a group exercise class, or hitting up your personal fitness trainer for a killer workout session that will have you sweating. Trust us, nothing will warm you up like a nice circuit training session or some HIIT exercises, especially if you go outside and find some sunlight in the morning. This speaks to the power of exercising for good mental health, too, as vitamin D plays a significant role in boosting your mood, energy levels, and overall physical health as well.
