vegetable shopping

When it comes to eating healthy, one of the biggest hurdles for many people is the cost of healthy food. Things like vegetables and fruits can break your grocery budget in a hurry. However, there are a few ways to buy healthier food when doing your grocery shopping without necessarily breaking the bank:

Buy the Healthy but Cheap Produce

Although things like raspberries, cherries, and strawberries can be very expensive for the amount of food you get, there are some fruits and vegetables that won’t cost too much. For example, one of the cheapest things you can find in a grocery store is a banana. The average banana costs about $0.20. In terms of nutrition, bananas give you a great value for the price and they can make a great snack when eaten with a fat-free yogurt and a healthy drink. Other inexpensive produce items to consider buying include carrots (usually under a dollar a bag), oranges, apples, and raisins.

Use Coupons

When it comes to produce, coupons will likely be scarce. However, many other healthy items do have coupons. In fact, there are some items which you can almost always either find on sale, or find a coupon for. For example, cereals tend to be buy one get one free at least every other week. Also, almost every single cereal manufacturer issues coupons for them on a regular basis. Stick to the healthy low sugar cereals and, if you add milk, stick to nonfat. Other items you may be able to find coupons for include frozen vegetables, yogurt, cheeses, and grains like brown rice or whole wheat bread.

Buy Lean Meat While it’s on Sale

As a happy coincidence, lean meats like turkey breast and chicken breast tend to go on sale much more often than less healthy options like fatty red meats. If you don’t mind eating meat that has been frozen, stock up on lean meats whenever they are on sale and keep them in your freezer. Meat can stay good for many months in the freezer. You can find the length of time different types of meat can be kept frozen here.
