There are many methods of detoxification. These can range from increasing your liquid intake to avoiding processed foods. Other methods of detoxification include increased exercise and the use of saunas to promote body purification through sweating. Whether you are considering or just want to gather some facts, here are the top 3 things to know about detoxing.

What is a detox?

The process by which your body naturally removes waste and toxic materials is called detoxification. It gets rid of toxins through sweat, bile, fecal matter, and urine. The kidneys, liver, lungs, skin and colon are the five organs responsible for removing toxins from your body.

Detox diets are designed around what your body already does. Detox programs are built around the idea of cleansing the body of toxins through eating differently and adjusting your lifestyle habits within a specific amount of time.

What is the goal?

Choosing the right detox plan depends on what you are trying to achieve. While there are a variety of detox programs out there, they all promote similar health benefits.

There include:

  • Boosting Energy
  • Healthy Skin
  • Digestion Support
  • Weightloss
  • Immune System Boost
  • Healthier Hair
  • Anti- Aging Benefits

These programs are usually accompanied with meal plans to promote the detox process. In addition to drinking lots of water, foods like brown rice, vegetables, and other foods with high fiber content are recommended.

What are the Pros and Cons of Detoxing?

Detox programs often promote healthier eating habits. These programs are usually long-term rather than short-term programs which promote a few days of fasting. Long-term detox programs encourage participants to eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables instead of excessive carbs. Some programs also help you to eliminate unhealthy items from your diet such as refined sugars, trans fats, and food preservatives.

Some detox programs like the ones that make weight loss promises are not ideal for everyone. An individual with pre-existing health conditions who is on medication or a pregnant woman would not be advised to go on a detox diet that involves days of fasting.  In some cases, detox programs that promise weight loss benefits are only short lived as the participant may gain back the weight they lost. However you decide to detox, remember to seek the advice of your medical practitioner before you get started.
