Well, it’s that time again – new year, new you.

Like many, you’ve probably made up your mind that this new year will finally be the kick in the pants you need to get moving and get fit – and you’re not alone.

In fact, about a quarter of the population plan to make health a new year’s priority; unfortunately, however, most who make that resolution never actually follow through with their ambitions. Even with the best of intentions, many strive for fitness goals that somehow seem to elude them.

So, what can you do to make certain your new year’s resolutions stick? Here are a few tips to keep your health and fitness goals on track in 2018.

Keep Moving

Committing to an exercise program means staying active even when you don’t feel like it. Staying committed to a goal is largely mental – athletes don’t reach their goals unless they perform the necessary physical training, regardless of how they feel mentally.

To reach the goals you set for yourself, emotions must be taken out of the equation. Tired? Do it anyway. Don’t feel like training today? Make yourself get out there and exercise, and you’ll feel accomplished afterward. Even if you’re exhausted, the only workout you’ll regret is the one you didn’t do. Once you make exercising a habit, your day won’t feel complete without a workout.

Set a Date

Setting a goal with a specific end date will increase your chances of accomplishing that goal. Making a deadline for a goal takes daily discipline, which encourages a mindset that prioritizes fitness above lounging on the couch. Try to set a date outside of your comfort zone. This will help create a sense of urgency and push you to a level of commitment previously untapped. Whether it’s a foot race, a fitness competition, or an obstacle course, signing up for an event with a date in mind will also help keep you on track.

Do Something You Enjoy

People are much more likely to stick with a program if it’s something they enjoy. Hate lifting weights? Try interval training. Don’t like running? Try cycling. Find an activity that excites you. There are many different types of exercises to try, and what may be ideal for someone else may not necessarily work for you. Choose something you enjoy, and you’ll want to show up every day.

Regardless of what your fitness resolution may entail, commitment and dedication are necessary to accomplish any type of goal. Those who achieve their goals show up every day, regardless of external factors. If you’re making a commitment to improve your health in 2018, prioritize yourself. It may take some time to adjust, but health is the best gift you can give yourself. Stay committed, and watch yourself transform.
