No one should blame you for thinking CrossFit and HIIT are the same things; you will often see the two terms mixed together in many of the same articles. Anyone who is just starting their fitness journey may not be clear on how these phrases relate to each other, so we’re here to set the record straight. It’s important to know what you’re signing up for, as the results of HIIT may not line up for someone who may have been better off with CrossFit.

HIIT

HIIT is short for high-intensity interval training. The exercises in a typical HIIT program focus on improving stamina and anaerobic capacity. Short bursts of intense physical activity have been known to efficiently burn more calories, with most programs involving alternations of powerful movements with short resting intervals. HIIT is an excellent choice for people who have very tight schedules and can’t dedicate much time for exercise. It is also the preferred method for anyone who just wants to lose weight.

CrossFit

Compared to HIIT, CrossFit is considered a more balanced approach to fitness. While it can improve endurance like HIIT, the gains do not usually come as quickly and are not as visible. This sacrifice is in exchange for developing several other areas of fitness, including:

  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Coordination
  • Speed
  • Balance
  • Agility

Many CrossFit exercises also require some equipment like kettlebells and battle ropes, as they are central components of activities that are meant to improve power. Most HIIT exercises are bodyweight focused like push-ups, squats, sit-ups, and rowing. Athletes who focus on CrossFit start seeing muscle definition accompanied by weight loss after a few weeks; they also get to enjoy working out with a supportive fitness community!

Similarities Between HIIT and CrossFit

HIIT and CrossFit are two different types of mixed modal training. In other words, the workouts are designed to avoid growth plateaus by switching up various activities within one workout. HIIT is more focused, while many CrossFit workouts include HIIT exercises as part of a program. Choosing the right training is all going to come down to what you want to achieve.
