We’re always looking for ways to optimize our workouts. From eating the right food to figuring out the best time to exercise, the search for the perfect fitness practices is never-ending. While the ideal workout may never be yours, there are ways to make your workout routines more efficient. Many believe that early morning workouts are the best kind, but are they truly effective?

Morning Workouts and Metabolism

A popular term in the fitness industry is excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). The term points out the fact that your body continues to burn calories after your workout. Even while sitting in your office chair, your body burns more calories if you have recently completed intense exercise. Studies show that more than 190 extra calories are burned during the 12 hours following exercise compared to those who weren’t active at all!

An early morning exercise routine is great for increasing your metabolism. Wake up, work out, eat, and repeat the next day. Your body does one of three things with the calories you take in:

  • It uses them as a source of energy
  • It uses them to replenish nutrients
  • It stores them for later

After exercising, your body uses calories to replenish your body. When you eat later in the day with your increased metabolism, you’re then replenishing and providing energy for your body at the same time. If you exercise later in the day, you don’t gain the added benefit of using your caloric intake optimally.

Morning Workouts and Sleep

Unsurprisingly, waking up early in the morning to exercise helps you sleep. At the end of the day, you won’t be tossing and turning but enjoying a good night’s sleep! In a study conducted by Appalachian State University, which had participants exercise at 7 am, 1 pm, or 7 pm deduced that those who exercised at 7 am had the deepest sleep.

Exercising in the evening can have the opposite effect and keep you awake longer. After strenuous activity, your body reacts by releasing hormones including adrenaline. A little shot of adrenaline before trying to sleep doesn’t mesh very well.
