When it comes to working out, winter can derail even the best of intentions. Colder temperatures and gloomy skies aren’t exactly the best fitness motivators so it’s no wonder why so many people fall off the wagon. Fortunately, getting back on track isn’t impossible. It just takes some solid dedication and a desire to get healthier. This spring, when it comes time to jumpstart your fitness routine, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Plan it Out

To help solidify your fitness goals, it’s always helpful to make a plan and write it down. Not only will this provide you with a concrete program to follow, it will help you avoid getting overwhelmed, which can often accompany weight loss efforts. Many people tend to get frazzled by the sheer number of diet and exercise routines floating around today. Having a concrete plan, however, will help you stay on track even when you may feel tempted to try a million different things. Consistency is key, so make sure to stick to your program even when you’re not seeing results as fast as you’d like.

Overhaul Your Diet

If you’re looking to burn fat, a healthy diet will do far more good than working out. Many people mistakenly believe that exercise will allow them to eat anything they want, but nothing could be further from the truth. Ever heard someone talk about abs being made in the kitchen? It may sound silly, but it’s true.

In order to burn fat, your body needs the right balance of macronutrients on a consistent basis. Processed and packaged foods tend to be very high in carbohydrates and fats, providing very little protein and almost no nutrition. While it may take a little longer to prep your meals for the day, providing your body with nutrient-dense, natural foods will not only allow you to burn fat more efficiently, it will help you perform better during your workouts too.

Make Realistic Goals

Many people hope to lose weight at lightning speed. Unfortunately, dropping 10 pounds in a week is highly unlikely and even dangerous for your health. Instead of holding yourself to impossible standards, try setting smaller goals along the way to your ultimate achievement. If you want to lose 50 pounds, try setting a goal for eight to 10 pounds per month. This way, you’ll have a realistic goal that you can build on in order to reach your ultimate end goal.

Alternatively, you can focus on performance goals such as lifting heavier weights or running a faster mile. If you’re consistent, the weight will come off anyway, without setting a goal to drop a specific number of pounds.

Keep Moving

Moving all day is more important than spending an hour in the gym. The more you move throughout the day, the more calories you burn overall. Plus, making a point to take more steps throughout the day is a lot less draining than slogging away on the treadmill or elliptical for an hour. Try taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking farther away when you head to the store or work. These small changes do add up and after a while, you’ll hardly notice you’re even doing it.
