Staying fit and active are vital to living a long healthy life but discovering ways to do so may be challenging. The more active you are as senior, the more you can enjoy life without dealing with the fear of falling or needing physical assistance. This allows you to gain that long desired independence as you age gracefully. At PumpFit Club, we have taken the time to reveal some low-impact activities that keep you active and improve your health. Who knows, you might discover a new hobby!

Get in the Water

Taking up something as simple as a swimming class or even water aerobics is a great way for seniors to get and stay active. Water aerobics specifically has been proven to reduce back pain and improve body composition without straining your joints. Even if you just go for a casual swim, a 180-pound person can burn roughly 518 calories an hour.

Start a Garden

If you would like to stay active without taking the traditional route of joining a fitness club, gardening is a great alternative. It is a fun way to get out of the house while working on a project that can ultimately lead to a decorative front porch and a healthier diet.

Go for a Walk

As rudimentary as it may seem, going for a daily walk is an easy way for seniors to increase physical activity. It can be as simple as a walk around the neighborhood or down to the gardening store to pick up more seeds for your garden. The idea of forming walking clubs amongst your peers adds a social element your workout that can make it easier to stick to

Pick up Yoga

Yoga, known for its peaceful and soothing nature, carries many mental and physical benefits. It is a great way to improve flexibility and minimize injury risk. Yoga can produce stronger muscles and help seniors avoid instances of falling, which can lead to serious injuries. Don’t worry about having to fold you body into a pretzel from Day One. Many yoga courses have modified versions of their exercises so beginners can gradually improve their flexibility.

Becoming an active member of your community is a great way to get out of the house and socialize. Partaking in events or contributing to causes that are near to your heart is one of the best ways to stay fit while having fun.

Just Dance!

Music heals the soul and dancing does the body good. Get from the bingo hall and hit the disco! Research from the January-February 2015 issue of The Archives Gerontology and Geriatrics found that dancing improves the balance and gait of seniors, which can reduce their chance of falling.
