When a child enters your life, there’s a sense of pure joy (and maybe nervousness). After factoring in your new gift, you might feel like there’s no longer time to do certain activities. Things like reading your book of the month, returning phone calls, and even relaxing at home might seem hard to make time for. Getting your workout in can also feel like a daunting task. Luckily, working out after a baby settles into your routine isn’t as hard as it seems. Here’s how you can fit in some workouts even if you’re on baby duty:
Working out every day might not be a realistic goal, but try to fit in a workout whenever you can. When your baby is taking a nap, or when your partner or a friend is watching the baby, you can make a break for a rewarding workout. Try telling yourself “today I’m going to jog with hand weights for 20 minutes.” A short, sweet, and rewarding workout is better than no workout at all!
Make Your Workouts Efficient
Because there’s a limited amount of time for working out, you should take advantage of the time you have. Short workouts might be best:
- Kettlebell training
- Strength work
- Bodyweight exercises
Not only are these workout methods quicker, they provide better results in the long run than endless minutes on an elliptical or treadmill.
Get Help From Relatives and Friends
People are there for you. Parents, friends, siblings, and even a trustworthy neighbor could watch your baby for a short time. 30 minutes is all you need for a good workout, so don’t be afraid to ask!
Put on Your Workout Clothes
It might be psychological, but putting on your workout clothes in the morning can inspire you to get out and walk or get a more thorough workout in. When you’re already dressed your brain might say “well we might as well get to it,” and off you go. You can even bring Baby along in a stroller designed for jogging and running moms!
When all else fails, a short workout is always better than no workout at all. If your baby won’t sleep and you don’t think you’ll be able to leave him or her alone, bring him/her along with you. It’ll get both of you out of the house to enjoy the outdoors. PumpFit knows how hard being a new parent can be.
