Cardio has always been associated with long jogs or hours of running on a treadmill. What if there was a way to get your cardio quickly while burning more than a normal cardio workout? High-intensity interval training, or HIIT,  is an intense method of cardio designed to provide a more dynamic means of getting your daily cardio exercise. Here’s why HIIT may be the best type of cardio workout to burn fat.

What is HIIT?

High-intensity interval training alternates intense and non-intense activity. An example would be sprinting for 20 seconds and then walking for 50 seconds. HIIT can be inserted into your gym routine to add an extra kick to your workouts.

Is HIIT the Best Cardio for Fat Burn?

Steady cardio has always been hailed as the best method for fat burn. Most cardio equipment comes equipped with a “fat burning” monitor. The fat burning monitor typically shows that 60% of your max heart rate is the most optimal for burning fat, which is what your heart rate is at during a steady cardio session. The truth is that higher intensities allow your body to burn more fat. By continuously incorporating HIIT into your workouts, you’ll start to burn more fat than steady cardio sessions.

The Afterburn Effect

In addition to burning more fat during the workout, HIIT also produces the afterburn effect. Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption, or EPOC, is your body’s response to intense exercise sessions. Your metabolism increases and more calories are burned after intense interval training. After steady cardio like jogging, your body could end up not burning any calories after the exercise.

Other Benefits of HIIT

HIIT encompasses a multitude of benefits other than fat burn. These benefits include:

  • Improved heart health – the interval of rest allows you to push yourself harder
  • Increased endurance – pushing your body to its limits in short intervals allows it to grow more accustomed to the workout
  • Cost efficiency – most HIIT workouts don’t need any equipment and let you save a few bucks!

If you find jogging boring, or if you’re looking for a new type of workout to add to your routine, HIIT may be the optimal workout for you.

Because of the way HIIT impacts your body, most personal trainers recommend starting with two days of the week dedicated to interval training.
