Working out is like eating vegetables — no one wants to do it, but once you get started, it’s hard to stop. Still, getting into the right mindset to work out regularly takes work, especially in the beginning.

Start Slow & Work Up

One of the biggest reasons people don’t make it to the gym is that their goals are too ambitious. Sure, it’s good to set expectations and to push yourself, but you’re kidding yourself if you think you’re going to lose 20 pounds in a week, no matter what type of workout you do. That being said, our gym trainers recommend setting more attainable goals in the beginning and working up from there. For example, if this is your first time working out in a few years, you should start with lighter weights and only do a few sets per workout. There’s no way you’ll be able to run a 5k or deadlift 200 pounds right away, so start with a mile run and only lift what you can without hurting yourself. Then, once those goals become easier, you can start running further or adding on more weight.

Don’t Force It

Though this might sound counterintuitive since your goal is to get to the gym more often, it’s important to listen to what your body needs. Rather than forcing yourself to lift weights when that’s the last thing you want to do, mix it up by trying a new workout machine or running on the treadmill. Or, if you just aren’t feeling the gym crowd, get outside and go for a bike ride or stay in and do a home HIIT workout in your living room. Flexibility is key when you’re getting back into a regular workout routine so you don’t get burnt out or bored of the same things.

Make Friends

If you are the only one telling you to get to the gym, it’s easy to find a million excuses not to go. Instead of thinking about the Netflix show you’d rather binge watch or deciding to run an unnecessary errand that can wait until Sunday, find a buddy to hold you accountable when it comes to your weekly workout plan. Group exercise classes are great because they bring people of all walks of life together to work toward one goal: getting fit. The same goes for personal trainers — when you have someone to provide encouragement when you feel like giving up, you’ll be less likely to give in to the inner voice telling you to veg out on the couch instead.
